Voltigeurs de Quebec Armoury

Project context

Built between 1885 and 1888, the Voltigeurs de Quebec Armoury is one of the most iconic heritage buildings in Quebec City. Inspired by French castle architecture of the 14th and 15th centuries, the facility originally served as the headquarters of the Voltigeurs de Québec regiment, the oldest French-Canadian military unit in active or reserve service.

Over time, the building also hosted concerts, exhibitions, and major public events. A fire in April 2008 destroyed most of the structure, leaving only the historic façade standing. After more than a decade of inactivity, a major restoration project brought the site back to life, successfully balancing heritage preservation with modern functionality.

Challenge and objectives

Advantage Sport was tasked with installing a multifunctional surface adapted to the building’s new event-driven purpose while respecting the constraints of a major heritage restoration.

• Ensure versatility within the main multifunctional hall
• Integrate the solution into a high-value heritage environment
• Address complex logistical constraints during installation
• Maintain a clean and contemporary aesthetic
  

The primary challenge involved managing a technical flooring system incorporating numerous integrated floor elements.

Technical solution

Advantage Sport supplied and installed Omnisports 3.5 flooring in two custom colours (Charcoal and Gray) across approximately 30,000 square feet, including the main multifunctional hall and the elevated walkway overlooking the space.

The installation incorporated an HS Sports Spray finish, ensuring uniformity, durability, and simplified maintenance for an environment designed to host events, performances, and receptions.

One of the most complex aspects of the project involved managing 630 concealed technical floor channels, each individually covered to preserve access to electrical infrastructure required for events. This approach maintained full system functionality while delivering a continuous and visually cohesive surface.

The project contributed to transforming the building into a modern venue capable of hosting a wide range of events while preserving its historic character.
